The Eritrean People’s Democratic Party (EPDP) Europe Region holds a regular meeting On July 2, the Eritrean People’s Democratic Party (EPDP) held its second regular meeting. Mr. Hamid Drar, the Chairman of the European Region, opened the meeting by welcoming the attendants and then he gave a brief explanation of the party’s activities in the region over the past six months. For their part, the members of the Executive Committee who attended the meeting gave more information regarding the circumstances in which the party had passed in the near past. In this regard, Mr. Barhane Ghebrekristos, the head of the party organizational affairs, briefed members on the activities of the party in other regions.
The agenda of the meeting included amongst other issues: the current situation of the country and the people of Eritrea and the peace initiative put forward by Ethiopia, whereas the members engaged in discussing these issues seriously and responsibly. The EPDP, as the resolutions of its second conference defined, is a party that seeks peace, development, justice and law by adopting a peaceful means with the participation of the people to resolve problems and differences that may occur internally or externally with neighboring countries.
The adoption of peaceful means of conflict resolution made the party always accept every sincere call for peace. However, the participants in the meeting, regarding the applying of the Eritrean Ethiopian border dispute, verdict, they called the talks between the two countries to be transparent and declared with the participation of the peoples of the two countries as they are the guarantors and the real beneficiaries of the achievement of peace.
From other side, the meeting have noted the great opportunities and hopes for stability and development that await the two countries as a result of the new Ethiopian Prime Minster Initiative, which aims to end the relationship of hostility and war that has continued between the two countries during the past two decades and replace them with brotherhood relations and cooperation. The meeting felt that the following conditions must be met to achieve the desired objectives:
a. To promote the desire for peace with the participation of the two peoples; b. The necessity of the legal basis for sustainability of the solutions; c. Adopting transparency and declaring all that is reached to the public; d. The adoption of mediation and arbitration as a method of dispute resolution.
The members of this regular meeting in their discussion assured that EPDP is a part of the forces that strive for democracy and justice in the country, would work to strengthen its internal unity and reinforce Its organizational institutions in such a way as to attract people to embrace the goals of the forces of democratic change, which seeks to build a constitutional state in the country. In order to reach this advanced phase of time, the participants have emphasized the validity of the party’s vision of the need to resolve the internal differences of the Eritrean opposition through dialogue and the adoption of peaceful means.
